Wednesday was in Herzelia Constantia... Finally drove there without getting lost every time we try to get somewhere we end up in the complete opposite area but we are getting much better at recognizing the streets now!
We did a sukkot activity for 6 different classes grades 4-6. it was great!
We have only been here 2 weeks and we have had so many parties/ events at the house already its so great =)
We had a BRAAI (bbq) with all the different youth movements together, was really nice to meet other people from the other movements. South Africans LOVE to braai!
Friday we had a meeting with the principle of all the Herzelia schools. There are 10 schools in Capetown 15000 Jews and 85% of them are at those schools so it is for sure the place to be. The high school and Middle school are located ON table mountain. Its unbelievable! Just breath taking!
Had a meeting with him about our jobs as Israelis. How important it is for us to show these kids that Israel isn't just what they hear and see on the news, that it is much more than that.
Israel through an Israelis eyes!
Its going to be tough, South Africans have a hard time being on the "right wing" point of view or Zionist point at all because of the Apartheid that was in SA. During that time the Palestinian side helped SA a lot and they feel like they have to somehow give back. A lot of South Africans still think Israel is an apartheid state. if they think that, that's what the news says, and that's what the kids think. So we are up against a lot, but its an interesting challenge.
The beauty here as i said is unbelievable, you don't know whether to look at the mountains, the ocean, the clear beautiful sky. It really is scary to think how people here have such good lives. They all have maids, Most people live in big houses and the ones who don't the houses are still average and beautiful. Its a beautiful place, there is kosher food. WHY WOULD THEY WANT TO LEAVE.
If i lived here i wouldn't want to go anywhere! As an Israeli shlicha its such a scary thought!
Israel is beautiful, and now i realize what a different beauty it is.
Its holy....the air feels like home. Even though the scenery here is breath taking I still know that Israel has something special. I feel like a stranger here, but in Israel no matter were you are you feel home and that definitely became more clear to me now because you can easily forget that because of this incredible beauty!
Anyways, just a funny story:
We have a white board in our bathroom and Shani and i always right funny random notes to each other. So after the first time OUR maid cleaned up I wrote as a joke to Shani Thanks Ruth for cleaning our bathroom we love you! not expecting her to even pay attention to it! the next day after she cleaned i walked into the bathroom and she had responded to the note!!!!!!
second story...In the teachers room at one of the schools after i drank my coffee i went to wash out my cup and they all laughed at me and told me that in South Africa "we don't do dishes" hahaha!!
Sounds like you are learning just as much as you hope to teach . . . as it should be! Also sounds like you are doing a great job already, as I expected! :-) Miss you! xoxo Sarah B.
